Thursday, April 15, 2010

Tuesday, April 13th:
Today's class was focused on finishing our absent image projects along with our tessellation's. We learned about different artist such as Steve Lambret and Mcgee who are members in street art. They love bringing in everyone's attention, but just artists. For homework we need to come up with five ideas for our own street art project, and for me, this will be interesting. .

Stealing the Mona Lisa

Notes:

The article expresses the feelings of how art makes one feel. Especially, how it feels when someone, or something, is looking at you and you don’t know it.

“Why is art made? To stop or prevent bad things from happening”

It is really personal when someone looks at you. Because you don't know what is going through their minds while speculating your every action, it becomes a very personal and self conscious moment. This becomes the relationship between the spectator and spectacle where there can be a reaction on either side. I believe the use of images is not to distract people but to capture them and to make them look at something and formulate a reaction.

The past couple of classes we had all of our focus on the outside mural project. We formed four groups, each with a different design focus, and started to make stencil cut outs for the brick wall for which we were assigned. Unfortunately, this mural project failed due to the owner going back on his word. It would have been an exciting project because I have never worked in the media. Last class, on April 6th, we learned about a technique in photoshop called "clone stamp tool" which drags color from areas around the specific area desired. We chose an image for homework to use this technique on and it is interesting to see how insignificant/ awkward the background is. Even when the focus image is erased, the landscape/ background is still known.

Response from Mexican Mural

Five essential elements for the Mexican mural Movement:
1. proud and heroic
2. public education
3. traditionalism and modernism
4. for and illiterate audience
5. spiritual quality

The mural for the city of Syracuse has to be able to show relations and ties to the people living there while also symbolizing a fresh, inspiring and new vision. The Mexican mural movement was a highly religious act whereas this mural would not be. However, they are both used for the public eye and can tell stories through images.

Readings from Joseph Kosuth's One and Three chairs

1. There are 5 chairs in Kosuth's artwork. The physical chair, made by the maker is the first chair that is counted because its a tangible thing. The second chair is the chair we can touch and sit in, making it an actual thing. The third chair is the chair the maker was thinking about while making it, having it be the image of the chair in our heads. It is the chair we picture, which brings me to the fourth chair- the image of the chair that we imagine that is a chair. And the fifth chair is the chair the maker wants us to believe is the appearance of the chair.
2. I believe Plato wouldn't believe any of the chairs were the real chair. The wooden chair is tangible, but that doesn't make it any more real that something you imagine, being the photograph or the definition. What is real anyway?
On tuesday's class I learned how to write my own artist statement while incorporating the use of another viewers perception as well. We did exercises to help us generate ideas and be "creative thinkers". There was also a demonstration on how to matte our mural design and artist statements'. The exercises made me think a lot more critically about what i want to say about my mural and they were fun.

This mural design expresses real life vs. the non-living. It brings out the mystical places that linger in our imaginations. The representations of living and non-living are also representing a two-dimensional world vs. the real world, in three-dimensional. The use of flowers brings this idea of beauty and mystical, exotic getaways. The concept of mixing real life objects and nonliving ones help create thoughts for the viewer about what is real and what is not in their world.

(sorry i forgot to post it!)

In class on the 23rd of February, we learned how to use the ink pens. We also learned how to add the watercolor pencils for color to present our mural ideas. We also finished our cards that we got from the other 2D class. It was also very helpful to work on our mural ideas in class because i expanded a lot on my ideas and created better mural concepts.

This idea had the concept of "reaching for your dreams" where the painting on the wall is of a knocked out wall and a dream world or something inspirational is painted on the inside.

This idea has the concept of exploring your own mind and posting it on a public area. The black part is made of a chalkboard type spray/paint and attached on the sides are big pieces of chalk tied to a string.

Mural idea:

A couple of very largely painted, flowers that seem to be 3 dimensional and a continued garden down on the bottom. The real flowers are then incorporated onto the wall, making it unclear which ones are painted and which are real.

Today we learned the process of printing our amalgamation and changing the resolution and size of our projects. We also went over mural proposals and how to document our work. We handed in our sketchbooks and we are coming up with about 5 ideas for a mural.

Yesterday's class had a lot going on. We learned about amalgamation which is our next project and then we went into a critique on our last project. This critique was very helpful and seeing everyone's work ad their opinions about covering helped expand mine.

This could also be done by using all products with the starbucks logo on it.
Another possible amalgamation would be to combine all the faces of the female artist with the best song of the month. For example, taylor swift's love story could be number 1 in October, but in November, Kesha's song Tik Tok takes over that position.

1. My top image right now would be the pose of a model. This expresses how people are so obsessed with image and looking like that model.
2. I also really like the combination of all celebrity yearbook pictures; the blurry image expresses how they came from a past and how they were just another face in the crowd and became famous.
3. The image of the family christmas card is also symbolic of how people want others to view their family over the holiday.
4. The flags of the world is also an option because no matter what they have on them, they are all unified with the same square shape.
5. Also, the pose for glamour shots could be powerful.
