Response from Mexican Mural

Five essential elements for the Mexican mural Movement:
1. proud and heroic
2. public education
3. traditionalism and modernism
4. for and illiterate audience
5. spiritual quality

The mural for the city of Syracuse has to be able to show relations and ties to the people living there while also symbolizing a fresh, inspiring and new vision. The Mexican mural movement was a highly religious act whereas this mural would not be. However, they are both used for the public eye and can tell stories through images.

Readings from Joseph Kosuth's One and Three chairs

1. There are 5 chairs in Kosuth's artwork. The physical chair, made by the maker is the first chair that is counted because its a tangible thing. The second chair is the chair we can touch and sit in, making it an actual thing. The third chair is the chair the maker was thinking about while making it, having it be the image of the chair in our heads. It is the chair we picture, which brings me to the fourth chair- the image of the chair that we imagine that is a chair. And the fifth chair is the chair the maker wants us to believe is the appearance of the chair.
2. I believe Plato wouldn't believe any of the chairs were the real chair. The wooden chair is tangible, but that doesn't make it any more real that something you imagine, being the photograph or the definition. What is real anyway?
On tuesday's class I learned how to write my own artist statement while incorporating the use of another viewers perception as well. We did exercises to help us generate ideas and be "creative thinkers". There was also a demonstration on how to matte our mural design and artist statements'. The exercises made me think a lot more critically about what i want to say about my mural and they were fun.

This mural design expresses real life vs. the non-living. It brings out the mystical places that linger in our imaginations. The representations of living and non-living are also representing a two-dimensional world vs. the real world, in three-dimensional. The use of flowers brings this idea of beauty and mystical, exotic getaways. The concept of mixing real life objects and nonliving ones help create thoughts for the viewer about what is real and what is not in their world.

(sorry i forgot to post it!)
